Confessions of a Contemporary Portrait Photographer
Friday, March 29, 2013 | By: Daphne Ellenburg
This is me. Today. In the winds of southern Alabama. (Finally the winds were working my hair like a high end fashion shoot instead of it's usually hurricane force disaster)
Today I did something out of my comfort zone. I packed up my gear , and photographed a studio of beautiful dancers on a white background. I never shoot white. I always shoot dark and moody. I prefer it. (Maybe I'm dark and moody.) I waited for someone to notice. I waited for someone to say, I don't think you're using enough light. But no one did. I brought everything I had. I used the mirror in the studio to maximize my five soft boxes of light. I hate strobes and always use continuous light. (Strobes just don't make sense to me and kids look blinded with them....eyes cry real tears....It's always a disaster.) No one questioned me.
I waited to hear, "What are your camera settings?" (Like anyone would ask? ) Hey, Isn't that ISO too high? Oh, my! I knew my settings were not text book. They never are. I like to do things my own way. I guess I'm a bit of a control freak that way. I showed shots from my live view. Gasp. Even then, No one questioned me.
While I was busy worrying about white backdrop perfection and obsessing over perfect portraits to make young girls feel good about themselves, all I heard were wows. People loved every shot. Girls couldn't believe they were looking at themselves. So somewhere between lint brushing glitter, and giving out high fives, I forgot to be self conscience. I laughed. I skated around in my socks. I relaxed and did my favorite thing in the whole world. I made people look they way I see them. Beautiful. And I did it in camera. Before using my fancy expensive software.
Today was one of those days when you realize you are living your dream every day. I am genuinely happy. And maybe it was because it was good Friday. But maybe it was also because God was smiling on me today. So, I smiled back.
Hope you had an Epic start to your Easter Weekend!
